Actually I just found a few articles and see that "Centre" is one of the leading open source student management databases.
 Centre (http://www.miller-group.net/), SchoolTool (http://www.schooltool.org/) and OpenAdmin (http://richtech.ca/openadmin/) 

It looks like Focus is out of the loop, Either it isn't being updated and maintained or else it is trying to move into the pay-only market.

The other look like good options for open source.

Never heard of it.  I went to their page and see this section:
