I recall at one time the mention of Audacity for a good solution for recording audio (freeware). I would like to add to your list of free another product that you can use to do screen recording. It is a scaled down version of Camtasia and can be downloaded free at http://camstudio.org/. 

If you are interested in making DVDs using automated PowerPoints this would be a great tool. It saves to either an avi or swf file and can be optimized for the web. I think that it will also do some audio editing.

Something to add to a "fun things to try this summer" list!
