If you receive a file from someone and can't open it because you don't have
the same software the file was created with, or simply wish to have the file
as a different file type, you can try to convert it via a free online
website (beta).
Zamzar.com allows you to upload a myriad of file types for conversion to a
myriad of other file types.
Here's a list of file types they convert:

After selecting the file you want converted and selecting the file type to
convert to, your file is uploaded to their server and converted to the file
type you want. You are then e-mailed a link where you can download your
converted file. According to their website, your file stays on Zamzar's
server for 24 hours after which time it is deleted.
I had a student working on a presentation this spring in Earth Science and
he needed to convert a YouTube video to run within his slides. While
searching for how to do this, I found this site. It seems to work fine.
